Hôtel Royal, Évian Resort

Lake Geneva, France

A legendary Belle Époque palace on the shores of Lake Geneva, within Europe's most extraordinary family resort

At a glance

Inaugurated in 1909 and built in honour of King Edward VII of England, Hôtel Royal is one of France's great Palace hotels — a holder of the prestigious Palace classification and a Leading Hotels of the World member. It sits within the 47-acre grounds of Évian Resort on the southern shores of Lake Geneva, at the foot of the French Alps. Redesigned in 2015 by heritage architect François Chatillon and interior designer François Champsaur, it retains its historic frescoes and Belle Époque grandeur while offering a quieter, more residential warmth across its 150 rooms and suites.

The setting is exceptional. The Alps rise immediately behind the hotel, Lake Geneva stretches below, and the air carries the clarity that has made Évian famous since the 18th century. That same water — evian® natural mineral water, filtered over 15 years through glacial rock — forms the philosophical foundation of the hotel's award-winning evian®SPA, named World's Best Wellness Retreat at the World Spa Awards 2025.

For families, Hôtel Royal operates within one of the most comprehensively equipped resort destinations in Europe. A 1,000m² Kid's Resort with three age-grouped zones, an 18-hole championship golf course, an entire team known as Le Bureau des Guides dedicated to year-round sport and culture activities, and a children's policy that includes complimentary accommodation and breakfast for under-13s staying in their parents' room — all within private grounds where the estate alone feels like a destination.

Why families love it

Children up to 13 years old stay and eat breakfast complimentary when sharing their parents' room — one of the most generous child policies in European luxury hotel travel

Children's treatments and parent-child duo spa sessions available at the world-class evian®SPA

Le Bureau des Guides on hand daily to organise all activities, including: hiking, forest bathing, kayaking, mountain biking, horse-riding and more

The Champion’s course, host to one of the major championships in women’s golf, and a Leadbetter-certified Academy

Where you'll stay

All 150 rooms and suites at Hôtel Royal look inward to the park, outward to Lake Geneva, or both. Interiors blend heritage craftsmanship — restored frescoes, precious woods, exquisite fabrics — with a calm contemporary comfort. All rooms include a balcony on most floors and bathrooms bathed in natural daylight.

View Room Types

Séjour Rooms (Park View or Lake View) — 27m² | Sleeps up to 3

The hotel's entry-level rooms, elegant and well-appointed, with a balcony and either park or lake views. Comfortable for a couple travelling with an infant in a cot. A sensible base for families whose priority is spending time across the wider resort rather than in-room.

Residence Rooms (Park View or Lake View) — 40–47m² | Sleeps up to 3

A step up in size, with park or lake views. The Residence rooms can accommodate one child in an extra bed or one baby in a cot, making them the more practical choice for families travelling with a young child. Connecting room options available, including with the Presidential Suite for the Lake View variant.

Family Room — 43m² | Sleeps up to 4

The hotel's dedicated family room, with park views and a balcony. The sofa bed converts into bunk beds to sleep two children, and the room connects directly to the Park View Suite, allowing families who need more space to expand naturally. The natural starting point for families of four.

Park View Suite — 70m² | Sleeps up to 4

A generous suite with park views, private lounge and balcony, connecting directly to the Family Room. Taken together, the two create an excellent family configuration with a proper separation between adult and children's sleeping areas.

Junior Suites (Rotonde or Terrace) — 58–62m² | Sleeps up to 4

The Junior Suite Rotonde offers lake views and a sitting area; the Junior Suite Terrace adds a private 20m² terrace. Both sleep up to four guests with a convertible sofa bed, and both connect to adjacent room categories for families needing to expand. The Terrace variant, with its private outdoor space and lake outlook, is a particularly appealing choice.

Belle Époque Suite — 90m² | Sleeps up to 5

One of the standout family options in the hotel. A 90m² lake-view suite with balcony and private lounge, with a sofa bed that converts to bunk beds for two children, and additional space for a baby in a cot. One of the few suites capable of sleeping two adults, two children and an infant without a connecting room. Connects to a Séjour Lake View Room for further expansion.

Léman Suite — 90m² | Sleeps up to 4

A lake-view suite with two private terraces (10m² and 6m²), private lounge and connecting access to the Exclusive Presidential Suite (Junior Suite Terrace). The sofa bed converts to bunk beds for two children, making it a practical and beautifully positioned family suite with genuine outdoor space. The dual-terrace configuration gives it a character distinct from the Belle Époque Suite despite sharing the same footprint.

Edward VII Suite and Royal Suite | Sleeps up to 4

The two most exclusive suites in the hotel, as described in the hotel's own materials. The Edward VII Suite (165m², fifth floor, balcony) sleeps up to four and connects to a Residence Lake View Room for extended family configurations. The Royal Suite (207m², sixth floor, three terraces of 20m² each including one covered) is the pinnacle of the collection, with sweeping lake and Alpine views and connecting access to two Junior Suite Terraces — making it an exceptional choice for multigenerational families or those travelling with a nanny.

Dining for all ages

Dining at Hôtel Royal is rooted in the estate's own kitchen garden, beehives and the produce of the surrounding Savoie region. Children are genuinely accommodated: a €25 children's menu is available across casual venues, with a 25% discount applied when children choose à la carte instead.

  • Les Fresques: the hotel's Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant, led by Chef Yohan Fatela. Seasonal creative cuisine beneath the estate's historic frescoes. Note: children's menus are not available at Les Fresques; this is the hotel's most formal experience

  • La Véranda: all-day dining with lake views and varied, produce-led cuisine. The Sunday Epicurean brunch, with live cooking stations, is a particular family highlight

  • L'Oliveraie: the summer restaurant, serving Mediterranean buffet and grills poolside beneath pine and olive trees — relaxed and well suited to families

  • Le Bar: a chic, timeless cocktail bar serving signature cocktails and afternoon tea. The Pool Bar opens in summer beside the outdoor pool

  • In-room dining available throughout the day

  • Nearby: Portes du Soleil ski area (45 minutes), Thollon-les-Mémises and Bernex family ski resorts (15 minutes), the medieval village of Yvoire, Chillon Castle in Switzerland, and Lake Geneva sailing and water sports

  • La Grange au Lac: an extraordinary cedar concert hall within the resort grounds, hosting leading international classical performers throughout the year
