Six Hotels Where the Setting is the Story

Author | Greta, The Family Suite

Most hotels are defined by their facilities. These six are defined by where they are.

A private wilderness in Finnish Lapland reached by husky or reindeer. A Four Seasons suspended above a Balinese jungle on a treetop bridge. A beach resort accessible only by boat on a Thai peninsula surrounded by limestone cliffs. These are not hotels that happen to be in beautiful places. They are places where the landscape is so extraordinary that everything else, however exceptional, plays a supporting role.

This is our edit of six family hotels where the setting is the point.

Kasbah Tamadot Virgin Limited Edition luxury family retreat in the High Atlas Mountains Morocco with mountain views
Octola Private Wilderness Lodge luxury family hotel in Finnish Lapland with snow covered Arctic forest and Northern Lights
Four Seasons Bali at Sayan luxury family hotel above jungle canopy in Ubud Bali with rooftop lotus pond and river valley views

Octola Private Wilderness Lodge
Lapland, Finland

Seven hundred hectares of Finnish Arctic wilderness, entirely private, reached by husky sledge, reindeer or helicopter depending on the season. Northern Lights from private hot tubs, mini snowmobiles for children, ice fishing, Sámi-led cultural experiences and a silence so complete it becomes its own kind of luxury. Octola works beautifully across all ages given its private lodge model, and the experience of arriving by husky into a snow-covered wilderness is one that families genuinely never forget.

Best time to visit: November to April for Northern Lights and snow activities. Summer visits offer the midnight sun and forest experiences.

Kasbah Tamadot — Coming Soon
High Atlas Mountains, Morocco

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Limited Edition retreat sits below Mount Toubkal in the High Atlas Mountains, with hillside Berber tents, an Animal Palace of resident goats and donkeys, and mule rides through neighbouring Berber villages. The Atlas Mountains at sunrise from a hillside terrace is one of the most extraordinary views in North Africa. Kasbah Tamadot will be joining The Family Suite collection very soon.

Four Seasons Bali at Sayan
Ubud, Bali

Reached via a treetop suspension bridge into the jungle canopy above Ubud, Four Seasons Bali at Sayan sits between two rivers with an elliptical rooftop lotus pond looking out over the valley below. This is not the Bali of beach clubs and busy streets. Days here move between Balinese cooking classes, rice field cycling, private picnics in the paddy fields and a Kids' Club rooted entirely in island culture and craft. For families looking for a Bali experience that goes well beyond the obvious, Sayan is the one.

Best time to visit: April to October for the dry season.

Six Senses Con Dao luxury family resort on wild Vietnamese island with private infinity pool beach and tropical forest
Rayavadee luxury family resort on Phra Nang Beach Krabi Thailand surrounded by limestone cliffs coconut groves and Andaman Sea
Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge luxury canvas tent resort in UNESCO biosphere reserve on Vancouver Island Canada surrounded by old growth rainforest and river

Six Senses Con Dao
Con Dao, Vietnam

A wild Vietnamese island backed by dense forest and fronted by a two-kilometre beach, Con Dao remains one of Southeast Asia's most genuinely undiscovered destinations. Fifty villas each with private infinity pools, turtle hatchling releases on the beach, jungle movie nights and a kids' club built entirely around nature and sustainability. The island's national marine park and the extraordinary clarity of the surrounding sea make this genuinely exceptional for families who want something that feels like a real discovery.

Best time to visit: February to September.

Rayavadee
Krabi, Thailand

The only resort on Phra Nang Beach, accessible only by boat, nestled between towering limestone cliffs on the Railay Peninsula with three beaches, 26 acres of coconut groves and some of the most dramatic natural scenery in Southeast Asia. Two-storey pavilions and beachfront villas sit within the national marine park, surrounded by jungle-covered cliffs that rise directly from the sand. Rock climbing, kayaking, snorkelling and the extraordinary Grotto restaurant built into a sea cave complete a setting that is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Thailand.

Please note: Rayavadee is currently completing a new pool construction project due to finish in late July 2026. We would recommend booking from August onwards for a fully complete experience.

Best time to visit: November to April for the dry season.

Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge
Vancouver Island, Canada

Reached only by seaplane or boat into a UNESCO biosphere reserve on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Clayoquot sits along the Bedwell River in one of the world's last great temperate rainforests. Twenty-five luxury canvas tents with proper beds, wood-burning stoves and handwoven rugs face the river, with canyoning, horseback riding, whale watching and bear spotting filling the days. Welcomes children aged six and older. The seaplane arrival over old-growth forest is an experience that sets the tone for everything that follows.

Best time to visit: May to October.
